I was so sorry to hear of Gord's passing. We went to school in the same grade. I remember him as a quiet person. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

My memories of Gordon include the following scene from the late 1960s.
I remember when we were all much younger, his face would light up when we would accept Harold and Pearl's standing invitation to visit their trailer at Rondeau Park and we would sit around the campfire.
He often seemed to be smiling at a private joke. He would grin watching us older ones break the park rules as we shut off our headlights (you could do that back then) and we'd sneak past the 'Yogis' and drive over the park sidewalk to break the one-car-per-lot rule. I would almost forget the excitement of breaking the rules til I would see Gordon's smiling face at the trailer.
I can still see him as a little guy: he'd laugh, enjoying his father's stories and then he'd smile at at his mother when she'd try to stop Harold before he got in high gear. But Harold would carry on. Pearl would shake her head and Gordon would beam with love and pride being part of it all.
He struck me as always thoughtful and sensitive. I was never totally sure if he was shy or just quiet so he could soak up the family better and was secretly taking notes to save up the stories to share with a spark in his eyes later.
I believe that the God of all mercy and persistent love was surprised to see and receive Gordon face-to-face so soon. His suicide will always remind me that I must always seek out someone - it might even be family or not - to talk about any private demons that may try to hiss in my ear from time to time. May the voices you hear now Gordon be only of love. Rest in peace, Gordon.
Love,
Cousin Wayne, Carol, Abby and family.

I first met Bonnie and Gord when I worked for RedCross taking care of their mother Pearl. I knew instantly that there was a strong family bond between this family. They always put their moms needs first. Gord believed in gave back to the community, especially volunteering at the legion for fundraisers. Gord took his mom out for breakfast on the weekends, Gord was a great fisherman, and good cook too. Thanks Gord for all the fried fish.

As his employer for the last 14 years we were fortunate to enjoy many celebrations and a few defeats with Gord. We had many happy smiles, good laughs and a few frowns along the way. He was a great driver who wore his heart on his sleeve. You always knew where you stood with Gord! Gord always had a trucking story from the 70s or 80s that would make you smile and shake your head. Our Christmas parties will not be the same without Gord and Jenn tearing up the dance floor. You will be missed buddy. Keep on Trucking!! Your Kurtz Family!

THIS MESSAGE WAS SENT FROM JAN COLE.
A BIT OF A BACKGROUND ON HOW JAN RELATES TO GORDON AND HIS FAMILY.
JAN MET GORDON AND BONNIE'S MOM OVER TEN YEARS AGO. THERE WAS AN IMMEDIATE BOND BETWEEN THEM AND JAN CHEEKILY ASKED PEARL IF SHE WOULD ADOPT HER. JAN ALWAYS FELT THAT SHE HAD A NEW FAMILY BECAUSE GORDON, BONNIE AND KEN INCLUDED JAN IN MANY FAMILY CELEBRATIONS OVER THE YEARS.
SO... EVEN THO JAN CANNOT BE HERE TODAY JUST KNOW IN HER OWN WAY SHE IS.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JAN'S MESSAGE IS ....
EACH OF YOU ARE GATHERED TOGETHER TODAY TO REMINISE AND CELEBRATE THE LIFE AND TIMES OF GORDON ALVIN SMITH.
ONE OF MY FAVOURITE STORIES IS ONE BONNIE, GORDON'S SISTER AND I SHARED.
WE DISCOVERED WE BOTH WERE OLDER SISTERS TO SOMEWHAT YOUNGER BROTHERS BOTH BABIES BORN PREMATURELY. NEITHER OF US HAD ANY SIBLINGS SO WE FELT LIKE ONLY CHILDREN.
NOW... HERE COMES THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BONNIE AND I. BONNIE KEPT BUGGING HER MOM CONSTANTLY WHEN WAS THE STORK GOING TO BRING HER A BABY SISTER OR BROTHER LIKE HER FRIENDS WERE GETTING. PEARL WOULD SAY TO BONNIE "MAYBE SOME DAY THE STORK WILL BRING US A BABY TIME WILL TELL. "
OH NO NOT ME... I DIDN'T WANT SOME SCREAMING DEMANDING LITTLE PERSON STEALING MY THUNDER. I WOULDN'T HAVE CONSIDERED ASKING MOM FOR A BABY BROTHER OR SISTER . WELL SO MUCH FOR MY BEING THE ONLY CHILD.
NOW ON THE BONNIE/GORDON SIDE OF THIS STORY... PEARL CAME TO BONNIE AND TOLD HER THE STORK HAD FINALLY COME TO THEIR HOUSE AND BONNIE HAD A TINY BABY BROTHER NAMED GORDON AND THAT BONNIE WAS IN CHARGE OF HIM. OH BONNIE LOVED GORDON AND TOOK CHARGE OF HIS NEEDS AS HER MOM HAD ASKED OF HER. SO SERIOUSLY THAT ONE DAY SHE FOUND GORDON MISSING FROM HIS CRIB AND WENT INTO PANIC MODE. I GUESS PEARL HAD MADE THE MISTAKE THAT SHE FORGOT TO TELL BONNIE PICKED UP GORDON FROM HIS CRIB INSTEAD OF CALLING HIS BIG SISTER IN CHARGE TO DO IT.
HOW MANY BROTHERS KNOW THEY WERE SO DEEPLY LOVED FROM THE FIRST TIME THEIR BIG SISTER SAW THEM??? GORDON WAS TRULY LOVED BY BONNIE AND WILL BE REMEMBERED WITH THAT SAME LOVE.
TODAY IS THE DAY TO REMEMBER THE LAUGHTER WE OFTEN SHARED
THE CAMPFIRES AFTER A GOOD DAY OF FISHING ON RICE LAKE
HOW MUCH RICHER OUR LIVES HAVE BEEN FOR YOUR BEING IN OUR WORLD
HOW YOU LOVED AND SURPRISED YOUR MOTHER WITH A CATCH OF FISH TO COOK JUST FOR HER
HOW YOU WERE KIND TO YOUR FRIENDS, NEIGHBOURS AND CO-WORKERS.
HOW YOU WOULD LEND A HAND WHEN NEEDED
HOW INFECTIOUS YOUR SMILE WAS
HOW YOU LOVED YOUR CHILDREN AND SO PROUD OF THEM
HOW YOU LOVED EVERY FAMILY GATHERING - THE MORE THE MERRIER
GORDON...,
OUR LIVES HAVE ALL BEEN BETTER
BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEEN THERE
SO NOW WITH THE ASSURANCE AND CONFIDENCE
WE LEAVE YOUR MEMORY IN GOD'S ALL LOVING CARE.

We grew up with the Smiths living just around the corner from us. Gord was always around, hanging out with my Uncle Albert and later I got to know him very well from my time working in the Thamesville Hotel. He was a lot of fun to chat with and had a lot of good times bantering back and forth about all kinds of things. He was definitely a chip off the ole block with Harold!
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. He was a good man and gone way too young.
Rest in Peace Gordie!
