My condolences to the van Koeverden family.
Gerry was my boss for a summer in Ottawa, way back in 1975. He hired nearly half my rugby team to landscape a public housing project and a new federal site at Tunney's Pasture.
Gerry was a recent university graduate and we were university students; he was not just our foreman but made us use our brains, leading interesting debates - on a wide variety of topics - at lunch break and the occasional after-work get-together. It's a tribute to Gerry that he remains one of the most outstanding people I've worked with during the last forty years.
I'd been searching for Gerry on the internet because one of the fellows who worked with me for Gerry is turning 60 and I wanted to elicit any memories Gerry might have had of that summer for my friend's birthday party (a number of that 1975 landscaping crew will be attending). I am very sad to find he has died. All the members of the crew will be sad when I tell them the news.

Lek and family, my heart goes out to you all. Gerry was an important mentor to me while a CUSO volunteer in Thailand in the early 1980s, and so respected by all of us there. Sincere condolences, Grainne (writing from Ghana).

We’ve lost a good man here.
As a cooperant in NE Thailand, Gerry stumbled across the eviction of a young couple by a loan shark. The debt was piddling and though his allowance was also minimal, Gerry got out his wallet and paid it on the spot. He didn’t for a moment have to think about it. The grateful couple gave all they could spare (a bottle of Coke and a phakhaoma) which tickled Gerry no end.
When we took over CUSO Thailand, annual reports had to include a country overview. First time around, we looked in the files for examples. Gerry’s were insane. He could ignore a coup but go on at length about a delayed monsoon. The first didn’t affect farmers much; the second for sure did. In his stubborn, shrewdly pragmatic way, Gerry arrived at some impressively insightful analyses. He taught CUSO about Thai agriculture and we learned an immense amount from him.
It was a privilege and very often (but not always) a pleasure to know him. Our lives have been immeasurably richer for it.

Dear Lek and Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Gerry's death, Chris Munro let me know. Gerry was such a dynamic, authentic person. He provided wonderful "hands-off" leadership to us in Thaiand and was always willing to listen to and encourage our ideas. It was great to get to know him as a student of learning as well and to talk to him about his book.
It is wonderful to see that you have grandchildren! No doubt you enjoy them immensely. I wilsh you all the very best, courage, strength, peace and love.

Dear Lek:
I heard the sad news about Gerry from Paul. Gerry was such an inspiration to me during my time with CUSO. I learned so much from him. He challenged my way of thinking and taught me to listen to villagers. He is one of the main reasons I have stayed in Thailand and have been able to do the work that I do.I am so sorry for your loss. My condolences to you and alkl the family.

I offer my sympathy and prayers to Lek and Gerry's family. Gerry worked for our company on several international and US projects from 1999 through 2007. I have fond memories of Gerry, his unique personality and genuine concern for his work and for other people. I had the pleasure of staying overnight at your home on the apple orchard and enjoyed playing cards and meeting Lek and the kids. You have my thoughts and prayers.

This is a great photo of Gerry taken in 2004 when he was working for Prairie Engineering as a construction supervisor at a seed facility near Sarvas, Hungary. Enjoying some down time fishing in a local river.
Gerry always had a twinkle in his eye and was a problem solver and forward thinker!

"This morning in the early light
I thought of you a while
And as I blinked my sleepy eyes
my heart began to smile
For I recalled your friendliness
Your own good natured ways
The laughter and the memories
Of happy yesterdays
Then as I rose to meet the day
I felt so warm inside
to know your friendship has given me a sense of joy and pride"

Lek and Family: Both Montha and Paul were shocked when we were informed of the untimely passing of Gerry. Although our families lived some distance apart in Ontario, we always felt that we were bound together by our links to Thailand and our commitment to justice and fairness.
Gerry led an exemplary life. He put to got use his unique combination of skills as a scientific farmer, an educator and a writer. We respected very much his dedication to his work helping farmers in Thailand. We admired his active mind which was always pushing the boundaries searching for creative solutions to some of the main problems of humanity.
We are so sorry to hear of Gerry's death and wish strength to Lek, their children Paul, Anne and Jane, and Lek's mother "Khun Meh" over the weeks and months ahead.
We have fond memories of our times together. We regret that we are unable to be with you at this time.

Dear Lek
I received this very sad news from Paul and wanted to send you and your family my sincere condolences. Although we have not been in touch for many years, like Richard I have strong memories of Gerry who introduced the concept of indigenous knowledge into CUSOs thinking. He was a wonderful member of the CUSO Asia team and many remember his contributions.
I hope that our paths cross in the future.

I would like to add my name to all those who remember Gerry well. I knew him when I was Asia Director of CUSO 1985-89 and he was a powerful advocate for alternative agricuture and huge supporter of all the creative ideas of Thai vllage technologies. Many volunteers/coopérants of those days do, I am sure, remember him vividly and thankfully, and I join them.
My best wishes to Lek and the children. May he rest in peace.

Dear Lek and Family,
It is with great sadness I write you. I have such strong and vivid memories of our times together in Thailand even though they were many years ago. Lek, you and Gerry became constants in my time there and I was enriched because of it. I remember the dedication of a big man with a big heart who was tireless in his efforts to bring about good changes through his work. Many long talks, much agonizing, lots of laughter and learning...all of this I remember with great pleasure and am grateful to have these memories.
"Good things happen when you try stuff" (my son Dylan at age 10). This, too, I think was Gerry's way. Always trying, thinking, working....
My heart goes out to all of you at this time of loss. I send you warm hugs and my sincerest condolences.
