Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It's with great sadness, we announce the passing of our Mom, Doris Marguerite (Mater) Barnes in her 94th year, of Dresden, formerly of R.R. #2 Croton. Mom was born March 7, 1923 in Dawn Township, passing away on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at Park Street Place, Dresden. Doris is the loving wife of the late Gordon Urias Barnes (predeceased July 29, 1993). Mom is the youngest daughter of the late Levi & Muriel (Leach) Mater and mom is the last of her family of 9 children. Most special and precious Mom of Betty and her husband Dennis Harmsworth of Glencoe, Willard and his wife Sandra of Chatham, Darlene and her husband Don Clark of Mooretown, Jerry and his wife Barb of R.R. #2 Kent Bridge, Doug and his wife Linda of Ridgetown, Eugene and his wife Barb of R.R. #4 Dresden and Lois and her husband Doug Shaw of Dresden. Cherished grandma of 20 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, many step grandchildren and step great grandchildren. Also survived by several nieces, nephews and special friends Gene Ann & Jack Dunlop whom recently moved to Petrolia. Their many visits and concerns were much appreciated. Predeceased by 1 great grandson Jeremy Bowley (August 1, 2013), 2 sons-in-law Leith Moorhouse and Gabe Verstichelen, brothers Walter, Alwood, Orlo, Llewellyn and Lloyd Mater and sisters Edna Moore, Ila Burnham and Viola Smale. Mom was born and raised in the Dawn Township area, living and farming within a few miles until 6 years ago. Selling her farm at R.R. #2 Croton and buying a home in Dresden in the fall of 2010. Mom was a farm girl all her life, raising 7 children with very little to work with. Nothing was never too hard for her to accomplish, either outdoors in the fields, helping in the barns, tending to her chickens or working in her home with very limited conveniences. Mom sewed all of our clothing from coats, overalls, suits, wedding attire etc. We didn't know what boughten clothes were like until we worked out and made our own money. Mom's prize winning quilts are a masterpiece enjoyed by her children, grandchildren and gifts to each of her great grandchildren. Homemade bread, cinnamon buns and butter tarts were her specialty said all who came to visit. Unannounced on any given Sunday an extra 10 to 15 persons for supper was never turned away and plenty was enjoyed by all. The Barnes family will receive friends at the Badder Funeral Home & Reception Centre, 679 North St., Dresden on Thursday from 4 p.m. - 9 p.m. The funeral service will be held from the funeral home on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 11 a.m. Interment in Shetland Cemetery.
