Doug often came around to the shop to help out and tell stories. He used to always tease me (after selling him a tractor) that he would have to tow it around the block to get it started. Enjoyed his wit and camaraderie for many years.

To an exceptionally thoughtful man who always had a great story to tell, Doug had such a kind heart. We especially loved going down in the summers to see him and Ellen. Doug will always be in our hearts and never forgotten. You will be greatly missed. Love the Smit’s.

I don't think any kid ever left Uncle Doug and Aunt Ellen's farm without a huge smile on their face and sparkles in their eyes. From kittens to calves, tractors to trucks, Uncle Doug was everything fun, lovable and exciting. For me it was when I was in public school and he took me down the road in his truck teaching me how to drive " 3 on the tree". Oh the excitement I felt as I grinded those gears to downshift to 3rd!!! You will never be forgotten Uncle Doug. All my love.

Dear Ellen,
My deepest condolences to you and your family on the passing of Doug.
I will miss our chats about his cows, how his crops are doing, his trips on the Gator taking Tucker for a walk and his sense of humour. I will miss his voice and laugh most of all. I am so glad I was able too chat with the both of you in his final days where we both were able to say what we meant to each other. Doug always reminded me of my father and he brought that part of my life that had been lost back into my existence.
I have been honoured to be a part of both of your lives and am sending much love and many hugs.
Sincerely,
Lisa

As a youngster I spent many weekends , holidays and summers on the farm trailing behind Uncle Doug and Grampa Robinson as we picked rocks from the fields, fixing fences and fed cattle. My memories are abundant, as are the smiles that come to my face as I remember my attempts at replicating their diction, Grandma on the woodpile as an attempt by Uncle Doug to load a rather nasty bull went awry, picking rocks under the glaring sun while sharing a chuckle or rescuing my little rubber boot from the Dawn clay as it sucked the boots right off my feet. As young as 6 they hefted me onto the old John Deere, instructed me how to stop and put me to work driving and stopping so they could load the wagon with bales. Two feet and a hefty thrust is what it took to push that clutch in but I was so proud of my accomplishment and that I was working with them. I can still feel the pride, the love and the contentment I felt after a long hot day, nestled between Uncle Doug and Grampa in the old Ford truck travelling the dusty road, windows down and the smell of summer as they took me for a treat … a cold bottle of pop. The world had never been brighter for me. Rest in Peace Uncle Doug. I love you Cindy
